We were wrecks by the time we arrived at Brasserie Blanc, make up running down our faces, cheeks red, eyes puffy, having had a really good cry at the Phoenix down the road in Jericho.

You forget Brasserie Blanc is a chain, and although there are now five locations in London and a further 12 Brasserie Blanc’s around the UK, I like to think that Oxford is given special care and attention, being the first and Raymond’s favourite.

*On April 25, Raymond Blanc will be hosting a party to celebrate its 21st birthday where it all began, Brasserie Blanc Oxford.

Availability is limited so please do get in touch with Brasserie Blanc Oxford for more information and to book.

In the meantime the new spring menu features classic dishes which have featured at brasserie Blanc over the past 21 years, and given a modern makeover.

The cheerful, fast talking and knowledgeable staff (none of that French disdain) showed us to a table although we would rather have had one of the lovely booths with metal luggage racks overhead. There was a lively buzz about the place and I admired the large candle holders on the rear shelf that were covered in layers of melted wax.My colleague ordered a glass of Fleurie (£10.75) and the attentive waitress asked if he would like it chilled – which he did.

I asked for a glass of white wine and was offered a number of alternatives before choosing the Domaine Begude Sauvignon Blanc (£8.25).

Both were excellent. We didn’t take long to make our choices – but the waitress talked us through the specials anyway.

My Cornish dressed crab with fries (£15.90) was a delightfully light meal although it didn’t take advantage of the culinary skills which were evident from the dinners of those around me.

It was perfectly cooked medium-rare and he enjoyed it immensely.Whilst we hadn’t planned on eating desserts, the suggested special (treacle tart - £5) sounded too good to miss so we treated ourselves to some of the warm, rich, sticky confection which was served with a light vanilla ice cream. With only one glass of wine each, I thought that the bill of £68.20 without service was a little steep.

One visit was enough to suggest an explanation: there’s nothing much wrong with Brasserie Blanc; the food is pretty nice, and definitely well-cooked, and the service is better than average, but while people who go there expecting a higher end British restaurant - food good, but not amazing, price high, but not terrifying - should come out reasonably satisfied, anyone expecting an authentic French brasserie experience will be horribly disappointed.

Raymond Blanc is quoted on the restaurant’s website as saying that they seek to provide ‘simple, high quality food that comes as close as possible to the meals that my mother prepared…at a price that encourages you to visit us regularly’.

Perhaps in comparison to Blanc’s flagship, Le Manoir, Brasserie Blanc is indeed informal and affordable, but the atmosphere is very far removed from the traditional French and serving my steak on a wooden board is not going to change that.

The atmosphere was a little bit stuffy, possibly because the natural brasserie clientele were all down the road in the gastropub, while the remaining diners were all rather respectable and grown up.

What really makes French brasserie food so special is that compared to British food, it’s exceptional value; you can eat something totally delicious, sumptuous, made with high-quality ingredients, for the cost of a sensibly priced pub lunch, which should hopefully result in a lively, bustling atmosphere.

So it was time to clear our schedules and make time for an overdue catch up and we chose French restaurant Brasserie Blanc as our lunchtime hotspot.

Specialising in authentic, sustainable and seasonal French cuisine inspired by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc, the paper menu featured dishes one would expect at such an eatery including snails, steak tartare and beef bourguignon.

The rolled up, perfectly cooked squid was seasoned with fresh coriander, roquette and curly endive and sat beautifully on soft strips of grilled courgette and aubergine soaked in olive oil.

With a smoked paprika and red pepper dressing on the side, the dish was packed full of moreish strong flavours that all seemed to complement one another.

The vibrant pulpy strawberries, raspberries and coulis alongside a spoon of Chantilly cream was a combination of heaven and summer on a plate.
